Style & Shopping

If you have wandered down North College Avenue in Fayetteville and felt pulled into a shop full of perfectly broken in denim and pieces that look like they have stories, you already know Dirtbag. What you may not know is the woman who took the reins and gave the brand a second life.
Ashley Emig is originally from a small town outside Chicago, but she has spent more than a decade in Northwest Arkansas and has watched it grow into the kind of place that genuinely roots for its homegrown businesses. She fell in love with statement making fashion at four years old and spent the next thirty odd years telling anyone who would listen that she was going to build a brand of her own. When the chance to take over Dirtbag came, she jumped, and she reopened the shop with a clear conscience and a clear mission.
Dirtbag is a grassroots, eco friendly, recycled, hands on, Black woman owned vintage and thrift shop, and the sustainability is not an afterthought. Ashley's whole reason for being is to slow down fast fashion and teach younger generations to care about the planet by buying recycled, then sending them back out into the world in pieces that are entirely their own. Every item is hand picked through hours of local thrifting, hand washed, and sun dried, which is to say that someone touched and considered everything on those racks. The shop also takes in your gently used clothing, makes deals through buy sell trade, and will even open up for private shopping with a small group.
Her advice carries the warmth of someone who has actually leaned on this community. Tap into your tribe. Use your support systems and the broader NWA network to test ideas, ask for advice, and share your progress, because the resources here for Black entrepreneurs are real if you reach for them. And the line she lives by is one we could all stand to hear more often. Do not let great get in the way of good. You are going to make mistakes, but you will learn as you go, so just get started.
